I have been spending too much time looking at all the quilts in the Bloggers Quilt Festival and discovering so many fabulous blogs and inspirational quilts. If you do not know about this fab event you can drool at all the lovely quilts by going to Amy's blog and clicking on more than 500 submissions for the quilt festival... I found the Giveaway hosted by Sew Mama Sew and decided I should get involved as I have enjoyed looking at all the quilts and other items. I am addicted to these little bird pincushions and have made too many. I added some crocheted lace around the base of the pincushion and found some pretty ribbons and pins to go with it. All you need to do to be in with a chance of this giveaway is leave a comment and I will use random comment generator to select the winner after May 25th. For those of you who looked at the start of my first quilt in the post below I can say that I have now finished the quilt top. I deviated from the pattern as there were some scraps left from the jelly roll and I pieced these together with some of the grey from the border. Youngest daughter assisted with the photography but I think she needs some training as it is not perfectly straight...

I think the grey border makes it less rustic and helps tie the different Japanese Taupes together. She had to stand on top of the bed (perhaps why it's a little blurry) to get enough height. It is approximately 56 inches x 80 inches wide.

I think you can see the border here when it is draped over the door. Once pay day comes I can buy my walking foot and attempt to quilt this (once I basted it etc). I have been playing with the back too. For those of you who said I would not be able to stop once I started you are right. I have been trying out some Granny Squares from the tutorial here. I don't have a design wall but this sort of works...

The book I'm giving away

Stampotique 36 - Altering A Book

Wow this is my 250 th post. In celebration I will be giving away a book similar to the one I altered for this challenge. I will pick a random comment from this post next Sunday 21 August. Sorry there are a lot of photos in this post.
Valerie at Stampotique challenged us to alter a book. I had such fun with this one and ended up altering three pages in my book. The book was given to by my eldest son as he worked for the publisher when he was in Paris. I was going to give it to a niece or nephew but something told me I would want to play with it.
The book began life as this:

It has lots of different sized pages like the screen that  is a separate page

This made me think of changing rooms which are not places I like going into to.

I applied gesso to all the pages as they are quite thin and for that reason I used a mix of dylusion paints, inks, glimmer mists and water colour pro makers.

I stamped Stampotique's Olivia on card three times and then added her head and three sets of legs to the dress, I stamped dylusions Ruby Rainbow legs and Love Struck Lucy onto card and added them. I wrote the journalling on the paper that I had used to protect my pages and stuck it down. "Does my body look okay in this?" and "Why am I the wrong shape?"

I outlined the original girl and changed her clothing a little. On separate pieces of cards I stamped Stampotique's Angel Boy and Oh Dear on card and added the wings and Oh Dear the page,  then Ruby Rainbow in three layers. I also used my new stamps from Shady Tree Studios for borders and words. "Embrace your curves, bumps, lumps and imperfections!"

I used more border stamps from Shady trees and the number stamp from Paper Artsy. I drew a danger sign on card and added it to the page.

I hope you all embrace  your bodies - or maybe you are that rare breed and actually love your shape.

I go back to school tomorrow for two days of in service training. I am often asked by people what we do on these days - usually friends who work who have to take extra days off work to cover child care on these days. A local Glasgow dj on Radio Clyde maintains we all drink cheap German wine (yuck) and play Twister. If only we had as much fun as that! Usually it involves us sitting on the plastic uncomfortable dining room chairs watching endless power point presentations full of statistics and acronyms. Anyone secretly filming our behaviour would be appalled at out lack of attention, doodling (I do this a lot and quite often sketch ideas for layouts), talking and generally behaving like our worst pupils. Why?  We we all think we could do it better, have heard it all before and so on. I have to say I really do love my job and enjoy teaching my pupils - what I don't enjoy is the endless paper and electronic trail (we do everything twice it seems) and administrative load that just gets bigger and squeezes the fun out of the job. I went to work yesterday (not an official day) and dragged Lens Guy with me as chief muscle man and drawing pin sticker. Why? Because it was decided our classrooms should be painted over the holidays so the last week of term we were told to take everything off the walls and shelves ready for painting. I needed to go in yesterday to put everything back on the shelves and put my posters etc up. If you know my scrapping style you can imagine my room - it is bright, cheerful and full of stuff. I will try and take a pic of the shiny new room at the start of the year - it might not be so pretty later in the year.

Another friend of mine thought it was highly amusing and didn't think he could come up with another job where staff would be expected to clear walls and furniture before painting and then put it all back again - he wanted to know why there wasn't a special team to do this. I think it all comes down to money which in the endless round of cuts is not there. I know I need to go to the supermarket and buy more pens, pencils, coloured pens and pencils and other bits and bobs as the department just hasn't got the money for this kind of thing and I like to visual stuff with my pupils.

Enough - I am obviously just going into decline at the thought of working which is mad as I am so lucky to have these seemingly endless holidays and having worked for many years in the private sector and had 20 days a year holiday I know I am lucky.

Card Making, inking, yet more mess and a giveaway...

I made too many cards today so I will send the butterfly card  to someone who randomly posts on this entry. You have until sunday to post a comment.  Last night I posted about the graphic fairy blog and the fab vintage images available to download  free! Today I needed to make a birthday card for my sister and a congratulations card for a friend who has just got a new job. In the end I made four cards as I was just in the mood - something I do not always feel about card making. I think I feel my messy style does not work so well on cards and they don't always stand up to close scrutiny.

First up was the Pierrot image which I printed on photo paper (all other paper run out). I inked the edges and mounted it onto torn inked vellum paper. I used dcwv all about girls card for background and added a velvet ribbon and flocked brads. I used permanent pen to write the greeting and went over it with white acrylic paint to soften the colour.

My second card used a wonderful canary image and I used the option that had writing on it as my friend would appreciate the message. I inked the image and mounted onto coredinations card which I sanded. I found a piece of faded floral paper left over from a project last week. Finally I inked a cream card and used tonic border punch to create edge. Oh and added flowers and an inked greeting from stash.

THIS IS THE GIVEAWAY CARD...I loved the butterfly images and printed out three small images. I then printed a sheet of music paper and used watercolours, acrylics and inked to make a mounting piece.
I used a polka dot piece of paper as the background and used my offcuts from punching the other card to make a border.

The last card was made using more paper from this paper pad used above (which came in a boxed kit and I no longer have the kit reference). I used the tonic punch and butterfly punch, which I then inked with brown ink. I used three vintage images and a torn piece of green paper to form a border at the bottom.
